About the Production

Rosies: The Women Who Riveted the Nation
by Amber Frangos
directed by Sommer Schoch

Rose Leigh Abbott left her small town Kentucky home to support the war effort and her children. Widowed with two small children she became a working single mother during World War II and became the face of Rosie the Riveter for the war bond films shown in movie theaters across the nation. Her efforts and those of her coworkers Margie, Doris, and Kay are vital in bringing the war to its victorious end.

This production was workshopped in July 2017 at Flashback Theater, and had a staged reading in August 2017. The main character is based on real life Rosie the Riveter, Rose Leigh Abbott (later known as Rose Will Monroe), who was born in Science Hill. You can learn more about the icon here.

Roles to be Cast:

Rose – mid 20s to mid 30s. Strong, independent woman with modern sensibilities.
Minnie – mother to Rose, 50s. Worries about her daughter getting along alone.
Margie – 20s. Unsure of her place in the war effort.
Kay – 50s-60s. Has lived a life of full experience.
Doris – 20s-30s. Protective of her friends and loves to play the numbers.
Lonnie – 50s-60s. Has toughened up to make the hard calls as manager of the women on the production line.
Janet – 5-8. Rose’s daughter, is playful and inventive. A child will be cast in this role.

Junior Cast: Each role above is available to be double cast. This cast will be available as understudies and will perform for select performance dates. Junior cast members may be ages 12-18, with the exception of Janet, who may be younger. Junior cast members will be paired with the adult cast member in the same role and will work with that actor in learning the part. This allows the junior cast members the opportunity to learn about working in a professional theater setting, while also gaining experience in preparing for a role. The Junior cast will have three performance opportunities.
