Flashback Theater Co. (FbTC) seeks cast members for an upcoming musical production of Little Shop of Horrors. FbTC is committed to non-traditional casting of roles in order to feature all facets of our community’s talent.
About the Show:
Little Shop of Horrors
by Howard Ashman and Alan Menken
directed by Ron Kidd
with music direction by Amanda Balltrip
March 2018
The meek floral assistant Seymour Krelborn stumbles across a new breed of plant he names “Audrey II” – after his coworker crush. This aggressive, R&B-singing carnivore promises unending fame and fortune to the down and out Krelborn as long as he keeps feeding it, BLOOD. Over time, though, Seymour discovers Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination!
What to Expect:
Actors will be asked to sing 16 bars of a strong ballad or selection from the show. Readings from the script and some group movement will follow the song auditions.
Callbacks may be held in the week following auditions.
What to Prepare:
Bring a headshot and performance resume (if available).
Bring sheet music in the correct key for the provided accompanist or provide your own pre-recorded accompaniment. A bluetooth capable speaker and aux cord will be available, but you are welcome to come with a portable speaker of your own.
Please dress in clothing that will allow freedom of movement for group games.
Although not required, you may prepare for the readings in advance by picking up a packet of the scene selections from the FbTC office during regular business hours, or by requesting them by email.
Roles to be Cast:
Seymour: An insecure, put-upon florist’s clerk and eventual hero. He is a genuine, well-meaning man who is taken for granted because of his clumsy ways and poor social skills. Age: 20-35 Range: A2-G4.
Audrey: Secret love of Seymour’s life. She has poor self-worth and education, but incredibly good looks and a sweet and vulnerable demeanor. Age: 25-40 Range: G#3-D5
Mr. Mushnik: The seasoned owner of the failing East Side flower shop and Seymour’s nosy boss. He is greedy and manipulative. Age: 50-65 Range: G2-F4
Orin Scrivello: An egotistical dentist with a passion for leather and sadistic tendencies. He is Audrey’s abusive boyfriend. Doubles as other minor characters. Age: 25-40 Range: G2-G4
The Plant: Puppeteer controlled. An anthropomorphic cross between a Venus flytrap and an avocado, the plant has an appetite for human flesh that is appeased by Seymour. This is a non-speaking role that requires rhythm, stamina, and a wicked sense of humor. Any Age.
Voice of the Plant: An actor/vocalist located offstage. The voice is that of a conniving, street-smart “villain.” A funky Rhythm and Blues voice is best. Age: 20-50 Range: G2-G4
Doo-Wop Trio: Street urchins acting as the occasional Greek Chorus. Young, hip, and smart, these three are the only ones who have a grip on reality. Stylistically reminiscent of groups like the Shirelles or Shangri Las. Ages: 15-35 Range: Ab3-F5
