If you know Teen Theater Festival, you are familiar with it at Somerset Community College’s Department of Theatre & Film. This year, the festival hits the road, landing at Flashback Theater Co. in downtown Somerset. Students will join the Let’s Play! Company in a day of skill building and theater creation as part of the joint partnership between SCC Theatre & Film and Flashback to continue a tradition of inspiring a passion for theater in young artists.

Let’s Play! in a Day will give students opportunities to experience improv games, a flash play festival, and masterclasses. Two tracks allow students to choose the option that is best for them! 

Winners of the audition competition and flash play festival will be awarded with summer training opportunities at Flashback Theater.

Flash Play Festival Track

Create a 10-minute play from scratch on site, complete with blocking, costumes, props, and character development. Plays will be provided.

Recommended for:

  •  Actors
  • Directors
  • Designers

Teams will present their play at the end of the festival, and a winning team will be selected based on the following criteria: collaboration, production value, storytelling, and overall impact. 

Prize: 2020 Professional Masterclass at FbTC
(winners will select 1 of 3 options offered in June 2020)

Solo Audition Track

Hone your audition piece with coaching and skills building. An intensive masterclass will allow students to develop a monologue or song, focusing on techniques such as character development, physicality, and vocal health. 

Recommended for: 

  • Advanced Actors
  • Musical Students

Participants will perform their audition piece at the end of the festival and a winner will be selected.  Limited availability: 2 performers per school, up to 10 total participants.

What to Bring

All participants should:

  • Wear comfortable clothing and footwear
  • Bring something to write with and something to write on

Solo Audition Track participants should also prepare an audition package:

  • Either 32 bars of musical theater song and a 1 minute monologue from a published play (a recording of your accompaniment is recommended)
  • OR 2 minute monologue from a published play

Registration Fee $12/student
Groups of 10+ $10/student

Meet the Team

Steve Cleberg, Host
Steve is the Professor of Theatre at Somerset Community College and founder of Teen Theater Festival. He has over 35 years of theater and teaching experience.

Amber Frangos, Flash Play Festival Director
Amber is the Resident Playwright at Flashback Theater and has developed multiple new works during her time with FbTC. She taught drama in the classroom for 20 years and currently is on the faculty of McNeil Music Center.

Sommer Schoch, Solo Audition Director
Sommer is the Founder and Producing Artistic Director at Flashback Theater and has worked in various capacities of the theater, including performing, directing, and designing.
