Local performers have been cast in the latest production at Flashback Theater Co. (FbTC), a theater company dedicated to exploring our world, the past and theater.

A Nightmare on Backstreet is a parody retelling of the classic horror film, Nightmare on Elm Street, as a boy band musical parody. Teddy Crooner, played by Renate Dopp, returns to haunt a new generation of teenagers in their sleep. Stacey (Amanda Balltrip) loses each of her friends to Teddy’s nightly visits and must resist the urge to fall asleep and become the final victim.

Tee and Bod, played by Sarah Wood and Jeremy Cloyd respectively, are among the friends that become Teddy’s prey and join his horde of backup singers and dancers. Stacey also tries to save her would be soul-mate Depp (if he would only notice her!), played by Gregory Blair, when she learns from her mother (Amber Frangos) the true story of Teddy Crooner. An ensemble of Teddy’s past victims accompany him throughout his exploits to complete the cast of characters.

Directed by Sommer Schoch, the production also features a talented production team:  Maria McNeil as Music Director, Leann Perlowski as Choreographer, Ron Kidd as Set and Lighting Designer, and Wesley England as Makeup Designer.

After singing in choirs for most of her school years, Renate Dopp’s performing and music took a back seat to working and raising a family. In early 2015, Renate performed in Flashback Theater Co’s Season Announcement Cabaret and re-ignited her spark to perform. She was a featured performer at the 2015 McNeil Voice Studio Winter Showcase and has performed at several community events. Most recently, she participated in Flashback Theater Co’s Let’s Play! Cabaret at SomerSolstice 2016.

Amanda Balltrip was most recently seen on stage in The Lexington Theatre Company’s production of Mary Poppins. A member of FbTC’s Let’s Play! Company, this will be her third full production with Flashback. She is also the Director of Music Education for McNeil Music Center and will be the featured performer at the Somerset Music in the Park series on September 8th at 7:00 p.m.

Sarah Wood was previously seen at Flashback in The Importance of Being Earnest as Cecily Cardew. Her favorite credits include playing Dr. Livingstone in Agnes of God, Cassius in Julius Caesar, Gavriella in Angels My Father Sent, and the ensemble of Les Misérables. In 2014 she was nominated for an Irene Ryan Award for her performance in Angels My Father Sent. When not performing, she likes watching horror movies and cooking meals for her friends. Sarah is a Bowling Green native and a Lindsey Wilson College alum.

Jeremy Cloyd is a Lindsey Wilson College alumnus of 2015. He was seen most recently with TheatreFest! at LWC in the 2016 production of The Glass Menagerie. Jeremy is a Flashback original and was in FbTC’s first ever production of Last Train to Nibroc. He is currently the Assistant to the Director of Theatre at LWC and is pursuing his MA in Theatre through Regent University.

A Nightmare on Backstreet: A Boy Band Musical Parody, made its premiere fall of 2014 at The Public House in Chicago to a completely sold-out and extended run. Due to the success of the initial run, Millikin University’s Pipe Dreams Studio mounted a well received run of the show in Decatur, Illinois in fall of 2015, making the show’s collegiate premiere. The show was remounted in Chicago, to much success, in February 2016.

This will be the fourth production of Nightmare, and creator Ricky W. Glore will be in Somerset for the scheduled performance dates as a guest artist.

“It’s the passionate pursuit of theater that led to Flashback doing this show,” says Sommer Schoch. “Ricky Glore and I attended Northern Kentucky University together and following up on what old classmates have been up to in the theater world got us back in touch. He has been writing and producing original shows that need their initial productions to become fully developed.”

Ricky W. Glore is a writer/actor/director/producer, who for the last six years has called Chicago home. Originally from Northern Kentucky, Ricky moved to Chicago after graduating from Northern Kentucky University with a B.A. of Fine Arts, and a minor in creative writing. After completing i.O’s (formerly Improv Olympics), program, taking classes at Second City, and performing improv and sketch comedy all over the city, he returned to play writing and directing with his original comedy, Dating Incorporated.

A Nightmare on Backstreet: A Boy Band Musical Parody by Ricky W. Glore
Hilariously go where no musical has gone before: the story of the original Nightmare on Elm Street movie combined with the music of ’90s boy band sensation Backstreet Boys makes for a night of nostalgic musical tingling. Recommended for audiences that can enjoy a good scare!
