If you’re looking for a cozy activity this winter evening, look no further than Flashback Theater Co.’s production of When We Get Good Again, running February 20-23, 2025 at Flashback’s downtown Somerset office. The administrative space will be transformed into an intimate playspace, decorated to look like the play’s setting: a coffee shop. Cumberland Roots Coffee will have their mobile coffee truck parked outside of the show, so audiences can enjoy a refreshment before the performance.
Flashback Theater Co. is founded on the passionate pursuit of bringing professional theater to the Lake Cumberland region and uplifting our local talent. When We Get Good Again features a cast of actors and crew members from Somerset, Monticello, Science Hill, and beyond. This fringe production will give audiences the opportunity to see actors up close and personal, encouraging them to see themselves in the characters.
James McLindon’s When We Get Good Again is a morally complex story, written to reflect the growing complexity of modern life. Tracy is an ambitious college student from an underprivileged background, doing her best to be a good person. Struggling to balance getting good grades and keeping up with her day job, she finds herself willing to take a chance on would-be-academic Perry’s ambitious scheme to charge wealthy students for term papers. Along the way, Tracy meets students like Roy, whose priority is on the hockey rink, and Nadiya, an exchange student whose academic rigor doesn’t translate into perfect English. She begins to realize that the morality of her choices, or anyone else’s, aren’t exactly black and white. This production is perfect for anyone questioning their own intentions, and striving to be the best person they can be.
Flashback Theater Co. is a semi-professional theater company, meaning that actors, designers, and directors are compensated for their time and contributions to stage work. The company believes that by paying artists, creative talent is encouraged to stay in the area long-term, growing the community’s cultural resources and expanding the opportunities available for entertainment and education in the region. Though based in Pulaski County, Flashback Theater engages artists and audience members from the surrounding counties of Russell, Adair, Casey, Lincoln, Laurel, Wayne, McCreary, and beyond.

When We Get Good Again
By James McLindon
Directed by Billy Christopher Maupin
February 20-23, 2025
209 E. Mt Vernon St. Suite A Somerset, Kentucky
Poor but brilliant college student Tracy needs straight A’s to get into a top law school that will forgive her mountain of academic debt so she can be a lawyer for the poor. With the economic odds stacked against her, she tries to rationalize her job writing term papers for wealthy students. But she’s not sure she can do it. When We Get Good Again explores the current age in which personal integrity seems to be eroding before our eyes, and each day seems to bring new headlines about politicians who lie as naturally as they breathe and parents who buy their child’s admission into the college of their choice. In a world of privilege and deprivation, is it still immoral to cheat in order to level a playing field that is already supposed to be flat?
